History
Kathrina is an exceptionally well-built 3-masted schooner, measuring 31.75 meters in length, 7.34 meters in width, and with a loaded draft of approximately 2.5 meters. The vessel was launched in the spring of 1949.
The construction of Kuunari Kathrina took place in Sarvisalo, Pernaja, from 1947 to 1949. The shipbuilder Albin Gustafsson from Porvoo served as the master builder, with Walter Forsell, originally from Härkäpää village, as the supervisor. Arne Lindberg, Kathrina’s first captain, sailed with a crew of 3-4 people in the Baltic Sea, transporting items such as coffee, bicycles, steel, coal, grain, lumber, and lime between Finland, Sweden, and Denmark. Between 1953 and 1971, Kathrina transported approximately 300,000 tons of sand for Finland’s construction industry.
In the early 1970s, Kathrina was sold to Richard Thompson Coon, who initiated a long-term and comprehensive restoration project to transform it from a cargo ship into a passenger vessel. The work was carried out gradually, first in Sarvisalo, then at the Sköldvik shipyard, followed by Ruoholahti in Helsinki, and finally in a dry dock on Suomenlinna.
Juha Stillman purchased Kathrina in 1993 and, along with Johanna Panelius, continued a project that had been on hold for a few years. The ship eventually received new decks, a stern cabin, tanks, engines, electrical systems, water systems, masts, booms, and more. Kathrina was decided to be rigged as a topsail schooner. Several TV and radio programs were made about the restoration.
In 2012, the vessel was transferred to RPR Group, which owns several sailing ships, but everyday operations were still overseen by the ever-resourceful Jack-of-all-trades, Hugo Stillman, who has spent the majority of his life with Kathrina. In 2015, the beautiful ship underwent a significant renovation at the Suomenlinna Viapori shipyard, during which the old cabin and sauna facilities were removed and replaced with a state-of-the-art kitchen that meets the demands of top chefs.
In 2020, the ship came under the ownership of Dynamo Shipping Ltd Oy, with its operations now being managed by the individuals behind the highly popular Soromnoo restaurant experience: Markus Jämsen, Leo Stillman, Hugo Stillman, and entertainment mogul Riku Räsänen.
